Counseling for transformation.

About Mantra Counseling

Mantra Counseling began in 2015 when Matt and Molly DeHoog felt called to create a space in Grand Rapids where people could heal, grow, and reconnect with themselves. After more than 20 years of community work and nonprofit leadership, they wanted a practice rooted in presence, hope, and meaningful transformation.

The name Mantra reflects the heart behind their work. A mantra is a grounding reminder — something you return to when life feels overwhelming or unclear. For Matt, using a mantra helped him stay centered on who he wanted to be and how he wanted to grow. He and Molly envisioned a counseling practice that offered that same sense of clarity and grounding for others.

Because they live, work, and raise their family in Grand Rapids, serving this community is personal. They see Mantra Counseling not just as a service but as their way of contributing to the wellbeing of the place they call home.

At its core, Mantra Counseling exists to help people rediscover who they are, clarify who they’re becoming, and move toward a healthier, more grounded life — one step, one conversation, one mantra at a time.

Matt DeHoog, MA LPC

Matt combines 15 years of clinical experience with two decades of nonprofit leadership, giving him a unique ability to relate to men who carry responsibility — at home, at work, and within themselves. He works with men facing grief, transition, burnout, and lack of purpose, helping them articulate goals that move them out of stuck places and toward a healthier, more grounded life.

Matt also enjoys working with couples, teens, and individuals who want clarity about who they are and what they want in the chapters ahead. His clients describe him as steady, thoughtful, and deeply practical — someone who listens well and helps them see the bigger story they’re living in.

Certified in the DISC Assessment, SYMBIS, and Working Genius, Matt regularly coaches professional teams in communication, alignment, and conflict navigation. He understands firsthand what it takes to lead people, resolve tension, and influence culture — and he brings that same clarity and insight into the therapy room.

When he isn’t meeting with clients or consulting with teams, Matt is an avid cyclist & a proud girl-dad of three and husband to Molly.

Molly DeHoog, LCSW

Molly DeHoog is a fully licensed therapist who loves walking alongside women in seasons of transition. She works especially well with middle-aged women and college students who are navigating anxiety, depression, identity questions, or simply the weight of change.

Molly’s clients often say that one of her greatest gifts is helping them slow down enough to name what health looks like for them individually, not what’s expected, not what’s demanded, but what’s truly life-giving.

She is deeply passionate about creating a space where women feel seen, supported, and empowered to move toward wholeness at their own pace. Whether someone is rebuilding after a major life shift or simply trying to find their footing again, Molly offers a grounded presence and practical tools to help them take the next right step.
